The archaeological site of Palenque is famous for the 1952 discovery of the tomb of Pakal, one of the most important rulers of the ancient Mayan city, inside the Temple of the Inscriptions.
Major construction to be seen in Palenque, in addition to the Temple of the Inscriptions are: The Palace with its unmistakable four-story tower, galleries, courtyards and boards with hieroglyphs and human images; The structure of the crosses, composed of the Temples of the Cross, the Sun, the Conde and the Foliada cross, most of the cross structures have relief of a corn plant in the form of a cross resting on a Maya representation of the "earth monster"; and the Temple XIII, where the remains of the famous Red Queen were found.
At Bonampak, it is interesting to see the murals of the acropolis style structure I which depicts the glorious Chaan Muan II or Jaguar Bird, one of the last rulers of this Mayan city. In the paintings, which were created in the eighth century, one finds images that refer to the preparations for a battle and religious rituals.

A transfer to Yaxchilán requires a boat ride on the beautiful Usumacinta River. Yaxchilan archeological site is located near the border with Guatemala and is known for its majestic buildings with stucco figures decorating the crests, its lintels and engraved steps. This was one of the pre-Hispanic cities with great commercial importance due to its position on the river. This archaeological site is within the Lacandon jungle and one experiences nature in its fullest glory with birds such as parakeets and toucans, and howler monkeys whose sounds are impressive when heard for the first time.
In Tonina, prehistoric site dating from 300 AD to 1000, one can note that all walls of the buildings have carved images of men, of which some in military dress. This is one of the Mayan sites that exercised a military power after Palenque. Furthermore the site has a unique construction because what has been identified as a palace and ceremonial center was established in one single pyramid.

It is interesting to mention that the archaeological site of Comalcalco in Tabasco State has architecture similar to that of Palenque. In addition it is characterized by a construction system parting from dividing walls or tabiques, it is one of the few places that are familiar with this type of architecture. It has 3 main buildings: the North Plaza, an East Grand Acropolis and Acropolis.
